Equipping

You cannot ask people to change their behavior unless you equip them to do so.

Too often we ask for change without giving people the tools they need. It would be unrealistic to expect a builder to work without hammers, wrenches, and other tools. By the same principle, we cannot expect a lunchtime walking initiative to work if employees have no sidewalks in the area on which to walk. We cannot create healthy spaces unless we deliberately design them with the desired behaviors in mind. Likewise, processes must be altered to empower people to take steps in the right direction.
